ChatGPT Just Became an Ad Platform. 31 Countries Woke Up to It Yesterday.

Invalid Date

Six months ago, OpenAI started running ads inside ChatGPT for US users. Most business owners barely noticed. Another ad platform, another thing to maybe think about later.

Then yesterday happened. OpenAI flipped the switch across 31 European countries. Germany, France, Spain, Italy, the Netherlands, Sweden, and 25 more markets went live on August 24. ChatGPT Ads is no longer a quiet experiment. It's a global advertising channel pulling in close to $1 billion in annualized revenue, with daily ad revenue up 25% since the start of this month.

If you spend money on ads for your business, or you pay an agency that does, this one needs your attention.

A Different Kind of Ad Channel

People don't use ChatGPT the way they use Google or Instagram. They're not browsing. They're not scrolling. They're asking specific questions about products, services, and problems they need solved right now.

When someone asks ChatGPT "what's the best CRM for a 10-person team," that person is closer to a purchase decision than someone who typed the same thing into Google and got 47 blue links to sort through. OpenAI is banking on the idea that catching people at that decision point is worth more per impression than traditional display. The early revenue numbers suggest they're onto something.

What's Actually Available Right Now

Ads show up for users on the Free and Go plans. If you're on Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, or Edu, you won't see them. That's an important detail I'll come back to.

The advertiser toolkit has grown fast since the May self-serve launch. You can run conversion-optimized cost-per-click campaigns (oCPC), upload custom audiences from email and phone lists, and target by geography. In the US, that means state, DMA, and ZIP code precision. In Europe, it's country and regional level for now, which is coarser but still useful for international campaigns.

Tracking has gotten serious too. The OpenAI Pixel and Conversions API handle attribution, plus there are integrations with AppsFlyer and Adjust for mobile. Geo exclusions and a bulk campaign API are there for agencies running multiple accounts.

Who Should Be Testing This

If your business sells to people who research before they buy, ChatGPT Ads probably deserve a test budget. B2B services, SaaS, consulting, professional services, and high-consideration consumer purchases are the sweet spot.

CPCs are still lower than Google Ads for most keywords right now. That won't last. The same thing happened with early Google Ads and early Facebook Ads. The cheapest clicks go to whoever shows up first.

If you serve European customers from the US, this rollout just handed you a new channel overnight. If you're a purely local business, the European geo-targeting isn't precise enough yet to justify the spend. But the US-side targeting (down to ZIP code) is worth a look.

The Part That Should Make You Think Twice

There's a quirk in how this works. Opting out of personalized ads on ChatGPT changes which ads you see. It doesn't remove them. That's landed awkwardly in privacy-conscious European markets where GDPR sets a high bar, and it's worth watching how regulators respond.

The bigger issue for B2B advertisers: premium tiers are completely ad-free. The people most likely to have purchasing authority at companies (Enterprise and Business plan users) will never see your ads. You're reaching the Free and Go tier, which skews toward individual users, freelancers, early-stage founders, and small operators.

That's not a dealbreaker. A lot of buying decisions start with individual contributors doing research on free tools. But if your ideal customer is a VP at a Fortune 500 company, this channel probably won't reach them directly.

What I'd Do This Week

Don't move your whole Google Ads budget over tomorrow. Try this instead.

Carve out 5-10% of your monthly ad spend for a 30-day test. Pick your highest-converting offer and run it as a conversion-optimized campaign. Compare cost per acquisition against your other channels side by side.

Upload your customer email list as a custom audience. Audience seeding on a new platform works best when you feed it data from your best existing buyers.

Be honest about the metrics. One-day view-through reporting is available, but don't let attribution inflation make ChatGPT Ads look better than they actually are. Run the same measurement standards you'd apply to Google or Meta.

A billion-dollar run rate in six months tells you OpenAI isn't treating ads as a side project. Your competitors are going to figure out this channel. The advantage goes to whoever gets there first.
