Claude for Excel Is the Best Thing to Happen to Spreadsheets in Years
I Spent Three Hours Last Month Debugging a Broken VLOOKUP
It wasn't even my spreadsheet. A client sent over a financial model with 14 tabs, nested formulas referencing other nested formulas, and one broken lookup that was silently pulling wrong numbers into their revenue forecast.
I found the bug eventually. But three hours of tracing cell references across tabs is not a good use of anyone's time.
That same week, I tried Claude for Excel on a similar workbook. It found the issue in about 90 seconds. Pointed me to the exact cell, explained why it was broken, and offered to fix it. I just sat there staring at it.
What Claude for Excel Actually Is
It's an add-in that puts Claude directly inside Excel. Not a separate window. Not copy-pasting data into a chat box. Claude lives in a sidebar and can see your entire workbook: every tab, every formula, every cell.
You talk to it like a colleague. "Why is this total wrong?" "Build me a pivot table from this data." "What assumptions is this model making?" It responds with answers that reference specific cells. Click a citation and it highlights the exact location in your sheet.
It works on Excel for web, Windows, Mac, and iPad. If you have a Pro plan ($20/month) or higher, you already have access.
Why It's Better Than Other AI Spreadsheet Tools
I've tried a lot of AI-in-spreadsheet products. Most of them do one of two things: generate formulas from plain English, or summarize data. Both are fine. Neither is transformative.
Claude for Excel goes further because it actually understands the structure of your workbook. It doesn't just see raw values. It reads formula dependencies, traces relationships between tabs, and grasps how changing one assumption cascades through the model.
That means you can ask it things like "If I increase headcount by 15%, what breaks?" and get a real answer. Not a generic one. An answer specific to your spreadsheet, with cell references.
The Features That Matter Most
Debugging is the killer feature. Complex spreadsheets break in subtle ways. Circular references, misaligned ranges, hardcoded values hiding inside formula chains. Claude catches these fast and explains them clearly.
Building models from scratch. Describe what you need. "Three-year revenue forecast with monthly granularity, variable growth rates, and a sensitivity table." Claude builds it, explains its logic, and highlights every assumption so you can adjust.
Data connectors are a quiet big deal. Claude for Excel connects to external sources like S&P Global, LSEG, Moody's, and FactSet through MCP connectors. Pull live market data or credit ratings directly into your analysis without leaving Excel. For finance teams, this alone justifies the subscription.
Charts, pivots, and formatting. Recent updates added the ability to create and modify charts, build pivot tables, apply conditional formatting, and set up data validation. You describe what you want, Claude builds it.
Who Should Care About This
If you spend more than a few hours a week in Excel, this is worth trying immediately.
Financial analysts and consultants will get the most obvious value. Models that took a full day to build and QA can happen in an afternoon. Error-checking that used to mean printing out formulas and tracing them by hand now takes minutes.
But it's not just for finance people. Operations managers tracking inventory, marketing teams analyzing campaign data, business owners reviewing monthly reports. Anyone who's ever stared at a spreadsheet and thought "something's off but I can't figure out what" now has a tool that can tell them.
The Honest Caveats
It's still in beta. Anthropic is upfront about that. Don't use it for client deliverables without reviewing the output yourself. It doesn't support macros or VBA yet. Chat history doesn't persist between sessions, which is annoying. And if you're working with sensitive data, know that your spreadsheet contents are processed by Anthropic's servers (with a 30-day deletion policy).
These are real limitations. But none of them change the core value: Claude for Excel makes you dramatically faster and catches things you'd miss.
The Bottom Line
Spreadsheets have been basically the same tool for 40 years. Faster hardware, better UI, cloud collaboration. But the core experience of building formulas, tracing errors, and wrestling with complex models hasn't fundamentally changed.
Claude for Excel changes it. Having an AI that genuinely understands your workbook sitting right there in the sidebar isn't an incremental improvement. It's a different way of working with data.
If you already pay for Claude Pro, you have access right now. Install the add-in and throw your messiest spreadsheet at it. You'll know within five minutes whether this is for you.
(It's for you.)
